The right waste code affects packaging, storage, documentation, transport and disposal planning. If the code is uncertain, the business may end up using the wrong handling route or delaying collection while the waste remains on site.
Start from the generating process
Review the process line, chemicals used, residues produced and whether the waste changes over time. The process history often provides the first clue to the likely waste category.
Review the waste characteristics
- Physical form: liquid, sludge, solid or mixed.
- Appearance, odor and handling condition.
- Presence of solvents, oils, acids, alkalis or heavy metals.
- Whether the waste is mixed with other residues, water or packaging material.
When analytical testing helps
Laboratory analysis becomes useful when the composition is uncertain, the waste stream is mixed, or the site needs stronger support for classification and documentation. Testing can also help confirm waste characteristics before treatment or disposal decisions are made.
Keep the records aligned
Once the likely waste code is identified, the same classification should be reflected consistently in storage labels, internal records, handover documents and discussions with service providers.
